I have a sony SR-1 ... it's a small HD prosumer video camera that captures video in the compressed AVCHD format on a 30GB harddrive. I them import it via Apple's iMovie which decodes the compressed AVCHD into an editable format.

Stick close to home...the storm came in further south than expected, so even the San Juans down in southern Colorado didn't get that much snow. If you have some good & safe stashes close to home, I'd stick with what you know for Mon/Tue...no sense in traveling as there won't be much fresh pow 4-5 hours south.

I think it's just the camera...tough to get a great perspective on helmet cams. I talked with him about mounting the cam elsewhere...he said chest level might be the best. Always an experiment!

Only a few clouds here in Avon at the moment....if you had monday and tuesday off(like i do) is it worth driving south tonight? the BC had been good this week so I am thinking about just sticking close and touring around Eagle county. Thanks for all the great info.

Great question! It's all about the orographics...in your area, a wind from the east will push moist air up the mountain (upslope) and make it snow. Many of the storms this year have been shallow upslope storms. There will be an easterly wind between about 5,000ft (the plains) and perhaps 9,000ft (Peak-to-Peak highway), so this area will get pretty good snow. Above ~9,000 the wind will actually come from the west, which means downsloping off of the higher Indian Peaks, which means less snow. Deep upslope event (where the wind is from the east from the plains all the way up to ~15,000+ feet) provide good snow all the way up to Eldora and the Indian Peaks, but shallow upslope events will focus on the foothills rather than the peaks.

I'll be giving a talk about winter weather and answering questions like yours at REI this Thursday (March 4th) at 7pm in Boulder. Come on over (it's free!).

Hey Joel,

Weather pattern question for you:

We live about halfway between Boulder and Nederland at atbout 6500ft. For many (perhaps most) of the storms this year, we have gotten more snow than Eldora. Why is that?

Pattern looks good (not bad, not awesome) over the next ~10 days. One storm should come through next Thursday, then another one next Sunday, and then perhaps another storm the week after that. At this point, the storms appear to track over Colorado (rather than jumping way south), to the chance of good snow for the central mountains is pretty good.
